Today was my first run of the year. My Comeback Run and I didn’t want to do it. In fact I don’t really want to do many things at the moment. I like the idea of staying in bed much more. Or having a cup of coffee and thinking about all the things I would do if only…
So, I decided to do what I always do and resist the run, it’s cold, I’m tired, I need to pick the kids up from school soon (in 3 hours) so there’s not enough time. Then I had the brilliant idea of making this run really short. Like 5 minutes? No that’s too short it takes me longer than 5 minutes to put on my trainers on these days. 20 minutes? No that’s too long. 15 minutes? Ok I can do that and that’s what I did. And I’ll be honest I walked most of it. I kept it simple and made it easier. In truth it wasn’t easy at all. I think in life we don’t give ourselves enough credit when we do “easy” things. Easy can be hard.
Starting is the hardest part. I could have changed my mind at any time but I didn’t I kept going slowly. Which is more than I did yesterday. So I’m giving myself credit for this small step. For doing a little bit more than I did yesterday. And I know my next run will be a little bit easier.
Why am I sharing this? Because it’s January and I think we all need a little pep talk sometimes. We need to give ourselves credit for doing a little bit more than we did yesterday.
Starting is not easy, make it easier, take it slowly, be kind to yourself and it will feel better.
